BIO

Joui Turandot is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner whose work integrates elements of film, fashion, performance, and visual art.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mills College (2004), where she studied audiovisual communications and Latin Studies. Her senior thesis, a documentary entitled *Yo Soy Asi* (I Am Who I Am), examines the lives of transgender sex workers in Chile. The film received critical recognition and was screened at prominent festivals including Frameline and the New York Gay Lesbian Film Festival before being acquired by Frontline World.
Throughout her professional trajectory, Turandot has engaged extensively in film production, wardrobe styling, and costume design across independent cinema, television, and commercial media. Driven by a commitment to sustainability and artistic innovation, she launched her own fashion line—initially called Mazura and later rebranded as *Vagadu*—that drew inspiration from visual arts and incorporated recycled and sustainable materials. Her fashion presentations often functioned as immersive interdisciplinary events, incorporating live performances, food, and music.
In addition to her work in fashion and film, she has pursued activities in event production, personal image consulting, and life coaching, with a focus on identity and storytelling as integral components of her artistic practice. Following a period of personal reflection and re-evaluation precipitated by the loss of her mother, she re-engaged with her artistic roots in Cuba and Mexico. In 2018, she co-founded *Silent Insurgency*, an activist art and protest collective, and in 2020 established Womb, an experimental art residency in Mexico City dedicated to fostering emerging artists and multidisciplinary practices.
Her artistic practice encompasses diverse media—including photography, video, glass mosaics, and live performance—and is characterized by an ongoing exploration of identity, community, and social engagement.
Currently based in Mexico City, Turandot continues to develop projects that intersect artistic inquiry, activism, and community-driven initiatives, contributing to contemporary discourses across multiple disciplines.
